8 Healthy Habits to help you through the HolidaySeason

Food, Family and Friends bring everyone together during the holiday season. Grandma’s cookies, holiday lattes and those holiday-coloured candies seem to be around every corner.
Some treats are just too hard to avoid.  For some, just a tiny bit of sugar turns on that sweet tooth and we are unable to turn it off.
​When healthy habits are in place, it’s like giving your will power a little super charge, making it easier to avoid overindulging this holiday season.

Here are a few healthy habits to help you through this holiday season.

1. Don’t skip meals. Skipping meals to save the calories for the holiday feast tends to back fire and lead us into overindulging due to ravenous hunger. Skipping meals causes our blood sugars to fall, leaving us urgently reaching for the first thing we see. Eating every 2-3 hours will balance those blood sugars helping you navigate the array of temping treats.

2. Contribute a healthy dish. Bringing your own healthy dish to an event will ensure a healthy option to snack on.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger. By drinking ½ our body weight in oz a day (Approx. 8-10 glasses), we ensure that we ensure that we are hydrated and can prevent over eating.

4. Choose your drinks wisely. Holiday drinks including alcohol are just empty calories and inhibit our decision making. Stick to calorie-free drinks such as water, tea, ciders or seltzers. If you do choose to indulge in an alcoholic beverage, make sure to alternate each drink with a glass of water.

5. Eat until you are satisfied, not until you are stuffed. No one enjoys that icky stuffed feeling where it’s a struggle to get up off the couch. Don’t over fill your plate and wait at least 15 minutes before you go up for seconds, remember, leftovers are not a bad thing!

6. Don’t feel guilty. If you do overindulge, don’t beat yourself up. Just make sure your next meal is healthy and don’t make overindulgence a habit.

7. Get your zzzz’s. Our concentration, focus, productivity and our ability to make good decisions is impacted by the amount of sleep we get. For optimal brain function we need 7-8 hours a sleep a night.

8. Find your recharge station. Just like our cell phones, our batteries need to be charged. When we are operating from a full charge, we are able to make better decisions and respond to life rather than react. Your recharge station might be watching your favorite show, it might be doing a craft or reading a novel that you get lost in. Carve out some time each day to recharge.

Food has the power to bring everyone together and the holidays come but once a year, so enjoy yourself!
Family friends and delicious food is what makes this time of year special.
​Remember, keep looking forward and bring only the healthy habits into the new year with you.

We're Having a Paint Party!

Join us on Zoom this Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m.

Taking the time to paint and be creative can combat stress and boost well-being. 
We are so excited to paint along with our dance teacher Gail Spencer-Lamm on Zoom, and we would love to see you there!

What you need:
  • Brushes required 1 inch or 3/4 inch flat, 1/4 inch flat and a round headed ‘detail’ brush.
  • Paint required: neon yellow, neon, pink, bright blue, African violet, black and white
  • Canvas required 16 x 20 inch or 12 x 16 inch pre primed canvas
All of these supplies can be purchased at Dollarama or Walmart usually. If you can't get an exact supply, just get whatever is closest.

When and Where and How to Attend:
  • Sunday, June 6 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Join us online using ZOOM 
    • Do you need help setting up a free Zoom account? You can do this on a computer, a laptop, a smart phone, an ipad, or a tablet. How much does the challenge cost?
This challenge is FREE to join for all Glow members.

When does it start?
It starts on Thursday, April 1, 2021.

What workouts are counted?
Gym workouts at Glow, attending Glow classes, home workouts, outdoor workouts, and virtual workouts all count towards your 30 days of workouts!

What if I miss a day?
Then you can double up your workouts the next day. But you can't miss 2 days in a row if you want to qualify for prizes.

How do you track our workouts?
  • If you workout at Glow, please mark an X next to your name on our Challenge poster in the change room after your workout.
  • If you attend a Glow class, please take a picture of yourself at class and tag us on instagram using "@glowfitnessforwomen" and "#Glow30days" so we can see it and put an X next to your name on our poster.
  • If you workout virtually, or from home, or go for an outdoor workout, take a picture and share it on Instagram using "@glowfitnessforwomen" and "#Glow30days" so we can see it and put an X next to your name on our poster.

What if I don't have Instagram?
  • If you are working out at Glow, no need for Instagram, just track on our workouts poster
  • If you workout at classes, virtually, outdoors or from home, then you can post your picture on Facebook instead by sharing it to our Facebook page, or you can send it directly to us on Facebook Messenger, Instagram messenger, or email - then we will mark your workout off for the day on the poster.

What kind of prizes will there be to win?
The price range of the prizes will range from $10 - $150, and there will be several prize draws at the end of the month.

I have hardly worked out during the pandemic! I don't know if I can do 30 days of worktouts in a row.
You can! This Challenge can be as easy or as intense as you choose to make it.
All we ask is that you share how you moved for 30 minutes with us every day.
The level of workout is up to you - if a brisk walk around the neighbourhood is more than you were doing before - then that counts as your workout.

Think of it as 30 days of MOVEMENT.

Women's Gym excited to Re-open in Selkirk Safely

On Friday, February 12 gyms in Manitoba were allowed to reopen.
Glow Fitness for Women was delighted to be back in the gym.
"Our goal with our Covid procedures was to make them so seamless and integrated that you don't have to think about it. We want our members to be able to come to Glow, get moving, and get their mind off pandemic stress while they are here. It only takes one session to notice the effect on your wellbeing." says Katie Hartle, owner of Glow Fitness.
Covid protocals are integrated - tracking and surveillance systems are built into the gym's software.
The air is kept fresh with an hvac system that pipes fresh air into the space from outside.
Distancing measures and cleaning are woven into the updated experience.
Hartle notes that getting everyone moving in one direction is nothing new at Glow, as they have a circuit of strength machines and cardio setup, "Everyone moves in one direction already!" 
Being a 24/7 facility allows their members to come anytime, allowing traffic to space out.
Members typically spend 30 minutes to 60 minutes at Glow, either on a treadmill, doing the strength machines in the circuit, stretching, or yoga.
The hydraulic-based strength machines are time-saving, two sets of opposite muscle groups can be strengthened at once, and a full-body circuit session takes 30 minutes.
"Our members come and get their workouts in and out very efficiently, which helps keep our 25%  capacity rules met." says Hartle.

And for those who can't come back to the gym yet?
"We have a program we call, "Virtual Glow." We film from our yoga room. We have live classes with our instructors on Zoom - and yes - we offer tech support!"
The Virtual Glow program includes a gentle pilates, a faster-paced 30 minute "home circuit", meditation, and a variety of yogas. Everything is designed for all-levels, and beginner friendly. 
Glow members who don't wish to attend the Virtual program or the gym can also choose to freeze their memberships until they are ready to resume their workouts.

Glow Selkirk is Re-Opening July 21!

We will be reopening the gym on Tuesday, July 21, adhering to all current government restrictions.
Check back here to find out more information about workouts and signing up during these restrictions. 
While we cannot be open 24 hours yet - due to restrictions - we will have amended staffed hours until we can.
As soon as we are able to return to 24/7 - we will!
At this time, we expect to be open under the following staffed hours:

Temporary staffed hours:
  • 6 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • ​6 p.m. - 11 p.m.

Yoga at Glow this summer
Due to restrictions from the government, we are not yet allowed to have yoga classes in our yoga studio - so for the summer, we are teaching yoga classes with our very own teachers online (access the content anytime!) and in the Selkirk Memorial Park.

Watch for our special Full Moon Flow and Let Go Yoga Workshop in the Park - Saturday July 4, 10 a.m. 
Drop-ins welcome for all park yoga classes - $10/class.

Join your Glow teachers...live from their living rooms!

Online yoga videos available from Glow!

You can sign up to support some of your favourite Glow yoga teachers, who will be teaching yoga live...from their homes!
Expect a few special guest appearances from some fluffy friends, and follow along in your pajamas. Yoga in your pajamas - there's a silver lining!

How does it work?

Your regular membership is on pause and your payments are frozen, however you can sign up for a special online membership to follow along our yoga classes online with our Glow teachers.
We will post 7 yoga videos a week.
You can join us live for the yoga video, or you can watch it anytime you want over the whole month.

Do I need to be a member of Glow to sign up?

Nope! You don't have to be a member of Glow to join us. These online classes are available for anyone, from anywhere!  Welcome, guests of Glow!

Where can I watch the videos?

We will be sharing the videos in a private Facebook group, which you will be invited to after you sign up.
If you do not have Facebook, you will be able to watch it on a private YouTube page - which means you can watch it from a smart TV too. We will send you the link after you sign up.

Where is the schedule? Which classes and teachers?

The schedule will change each week, but the videos will stay up for the whole month so you can revisit your favourites anytime.

Here is a sampling of what to expect:

Monday - Yin and Guided breath
Tuesday - Yoga for Back, Neck and Shoulders, or Full Moon Flow and Let Go Yoga Workshop
Wednesday - Relaxing Hatha Yoga
Thursday - Core and Restore
Friday - 20 minute Morning Yoga,  and 20 Minute Bedtime Yoga
Saturday - Quick Yoga Strength Workout
Sunday - Yoga to Align your Chakras

Please note, our online yoga classes run for different lengths, from 20 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the class. 

How much does it cost?

We understand this might be a tough time financially for some.
For this reason, we are letting you decide how much to pay for a 30 day subscription to our online classes. 
​We are suggesting a donation of $39.95, but you can pay whatever you want when you sign up.

How do I sign up?

To our beloved Glowing Community,
We understand that our little gym and yoga studio is more than just a place to workout and do yoga.
We are a refuge from the daily challenges of life, a place for women to recharge and reconnect, with yourself and with our community of women.
A place to become stronger not only physically, but mentally and emotionally too.
Women have more on our plates than ever before, as caregivers, as workers, as wives and mothers and sisters and friends - and an outbreak doesn't make this any less true.
Now, more than ever, in these uncertain and isolating times with the Covid-19 outbreak, women, and your families, deserve the support of your community, the mental and physical benefits of a workout, and space and time for yourself to recharge your batteries to go on.
As a team at Glow, we got together and discussed these needs, considered all that you, our members and community, would be needing at this time in our lives. 
We asked ourselves, how can we help? How can we be your sanctuary, your place to recharge, to connect with your community and stay inspired without seeing each other physically? How can we provide a full wellness experience remotely?
For this reason, we have created a new program with these needs of you, our community, in mind. We  also chose to set a low price, as we understand that many of our members will be struggling with loss of work at this time.
We didn't want to just provide workout videos or tutorials, because Glow is more than a place to workout - and we think our community needs  more than just workouts right now to face the incredible stress that so many women and families might be going through in these times. We wanted to tailor our program to reflect the reality that comes with being stuck at home, either alone, or perhaps with extra family members to take care of.
As a small business, we also wanted to create an avenue to help support as many of our employees as possible, especially those who might not qualify for EI or other forms of financial support while our gym is closed.
Many of you have asked us how you can help us to stay open as a business, and from the bottom of our hearts we thank you! 
Opening our doors again when this is over is our goal, and we can't wait to see you all in person again! 
Joining our challenge, or, if you prefer, just joining our workout videos, or exploring some of the other options we have to support Glow at this time, are all ways that you can help us all! Thank you a million times for your support!

Celebrate Women's Day and Happy 2nd Birthday Glow with a Party at our Place!

​Please join us at Glow's Selkirk location Sunday, March 8th, 12pm-5pm, for our 2nd Anniversary Event/Celebration in honour of International Women's Day!
We have a fun day lined up with local vendors such as Marta with doTERRA essential oils; Brie of Brie's Botanicals with her all-natural oil blend products; Heather with 13 Gypsy Moons brings her yoga-inspired bracelets; and Sara from Three 6 Tea will have a tea station set up.
Special Women's Wellness-Inspired Workshops by:
  • Gail Spencer-Lamm will take us through a Yoga Dance-Fusion Class from 11:00am-12 noon (this must be signed up for in advance as space is limited).
  • Mary-Anne McGavock will guide us through an informative "Women's Circle", gathering to celebrate the Feminine; learning about "herstory" (as "his"tory is already well documented) from 12pm-12:50pm.
  • Our resident Meditation teacher, Irene Way will take us on a guided meditation from 1pm-2pm.
  • A nutrition presentation on Gut health (very informative) will be hosted by nutritionist Elizabeth Logan from 2pm-3pm.

    Why Glow?

    The Glow workout gives you a full strength workout, just like lifting weights, but without the weight. Glow's machines use a hydraulic resistance system that responds differently to each person who uses it. This makes it a safe workout for women of all ages and fitness levels.
    The circuit works the whole body in thirty minutes - like having a personal trainer rolled right into your gym!
    We also have classes in yoga at all levels, pilates, barre, and meditation.
