Glow Fitness for Women is excited to launch a new Walking and Running club for women in Gimli this summer. "You can start your morning halfway to 10,000 steps - all while enjoying lakeside scenery, fresh air, and new friends! We feel this is a great way to soak up the glorious Gimli surroundings and be active and healthy at the lake," says Glow owner Katie Hartle. Participants can walk, power walk, gentle jog, or run, or mix it up. The Walk/Run Club can accomodate all levels of women, and strollers are welcome. A Glow Coach will lead the group, and provide advice on maintaining proper form and self-monitoring heart rate. The coach will lead the group through stretches at the end. "We are excited to explore our community, and also to provide a safe way for women to walk or run early in the mornings." adds Hartle. Drop-ins are welcome (for $5), and the Ladies Walk and Run club is included in the cost of membership for members of Glow Fitness for Women in either Gimli or Selkirk locations. Women are invited to meet at Glow Fitness for Women (40 Centre Street) on Friday mornings just before 7 a.m. all summer long. The group will leave Glow at 7 a.m. Women are encouraged to attend on Fridays rain or shine, because there will be the option to either run in the rain or do a group workout inside Glow instead. Glow Fitness is also putting on regular yoga classes all summer, including Sunrise Beach Yoga and the whimsically-named Nautical Yoga. More information about the Walk and Run Club, yoga, and regular gym memberships is available on their website, glowfitnessforwomen.ca. Why heated floors in the yoga studio?
The first thing you may notice when you enter the Glow studio is warmth under your feet. We put a lot of thought into the studio flooring, so that you can enjoy the best wellness experience possible - when lying in resting poses on the ground, a cold floor would not be very comfortable, but our cushioned and heated floors provide more than just comfort.
Have you ever touched a surface warmed by the sun on an early spring day and felt a pleasant warmth? The sun is the main source of healing radiant energy that we experience daily.
This natural warming effect is replicated in our studio floors - Direct, radiant heat can reach further into the muscles delivering a therapeutic experience with many health benefits.
Our bodies radiate infrared energy out through the skin.
The energy output from our floors is tuned to correspond very closely to the body’s own radiant energy. Our bodies absorb as much as 93% of the
infrared waves that reach our skin, which warms you to a greater depth and more efficiently than other types of heat, which only heats the skin superficially.
This crucial difference explains many of the healing benefits achieved by lying on the floors in the Glow studio.
Medical practitioners make use of Infrared Radiant Heat to treat sprains, strains,
bursitis, peripheral vascular diseases, arthritis, and muscle pain.
Studies have shown wellness benefits achieved through deep-reaching direct heat can help to treat many conditions including:
• TMJ Arthritis + Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Muscle Spasms – reduced or eliminated
• Traumatic Arthritis
• Lower Back Pain
• Disc-protrusion Related Neuralgia
• Brain Contusion – accelerated healing
• Tight shoulders – relaxed
• Compression Fracture
• Spinal Cord Shock – post traumatic shock reversed
• Muscle Tension – relaxed
• Post-exercise Muscle Pain
• Menopause
• Insomnia
Direct heat produces therapeutic effects because:
1. It increases the extensibility of collagen tissues. 2. It decreases joint stiffness directly. 3. It is relieves muscle spasms 4. It produces pain relief. 5. It increases blood flow. 6. It assists in resolution of inflammatory infiltrates, edema and exudates. 7. More recently, it has been used in cancer therapy.
The healing benefits of direct radiant heat are too numerous to list, so we’ll finish off with one more reason to love your heated floors at Glow – they are comfortable and relaxing!

When Jill Dowson heard about Glow Fitness for Women opening in Selkirk through word of mouth, she was one of the first to sign up.
Dowson used to run a club from a franchise called Curves, and when she saw the women’s-only circuit at Glow, she was excited for a chance to return to a workout that she missed since her club closed.
“It feels like I’m coming home. It’s a grown-up girlfriends club! And so glad to see smiling faces when I open the door!” says Dowson about her experience since joining.
The Glow circuit, just like the one at Dowson’s former club, uses a force called hydraulic resistance to create a full body strength workout, like lifting weights but more comparable to swimming, because the resistance of the machines will increase depending on how fast you push or pull, and you raise your heart rate for the additional benefit of a cardio workout.
“Easy weight loss and muscle toning. It’s an hour and a half workout in a half hour!” Says Dowson on the benefits she remembers from when she owned her club.
“It’s for every woman too, the machines will adjust for everyone and will continue to challenge you even after you have gotten stronger. And it’s nice to see the yoga added to complement the circuit.”
Since Glow Fitness for Women opened a few weeks ago, Dowson now works out at Glow a few times a week with her friend Ruth Weins.
Weins also used to work out at a circuit style gym in the past and has been enjoying her workouts so far.
“I like it because it’s stress-free! I have so much more energy now!” says Weins.
Feedback from members working out in the morning show similar enthusiasm for the new gym.
“I find it empowering, the staff is so motivational and welcoming. The space is beautiful” Glow member Dianna Mae Hocaluk comments cheerfully before her regular early morning yoga.
“No one judges, you don’t need headphones either!” Christie Pellaers, another member, added enthusiastically from the circuit.
“Oh yes! That’s so important, and the schedule for the yoga is so thoughtful for a working professional woman” Hocaluk continued.
“It’s just such a positive environment!” Pellaers finished off.
Some other general comments heard dancing around the space between the recovery boards and the yoga studio show similar sentiments:
“I’m happy that it’s back, it’s so nice to get back into it!” said one member in between squats.
“The circuit and the yoga are both so easy to get into, doesn’t matter your current shape or activity level!” Added another from the stretch area.
Glow Fitness for Women opened March 12 in downtown Selkirk at 217 Clandeboye avenue, close to the waterfront. The women’s-only gym has memberships with and without contracts, and is open 24/7, with coaches on-site six days a week.
New members are welcome to drop by during staffed hours, visit online (glowfitnessforwomen.ca) or call to sign up – 204.420.4280.
